Mary Pickford's California Bear Flag

This is a photograph found at Photobucket by lynaz03 showing a California Bear Flag which was originally owned by Mary Pickford. It is or was displayed at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Mary Pickford (1892 -1979) was a Canadian-born motion picture acress, co-founder of the film studion United Artists and one of the original 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She was known as "America's Sweetheart."

  1. There could be more here than is readily obvious. Notice the large star (as on the Bear Flag) and the oversized California name. Did you know Mary Pickford was a friend of Mary Benicia Semple, Dr. Semple's daughter? Mary Semple appeared in a few early Hollywood silent films in the early 1920's under the stage name California Truman and was one of the founders and an active member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West. Mary Pickford wrote a short note, which I have seen, about her fond memories of her friend.
