A quite funny, relatively recent, Bear Flag rumor/urban legend is reported at Snopes.com. It is claimed that the original plan for the flag was that it what to have a "pear" on it in acquiescence to the desires of a Captain Bartlett, developer of the Bartlett pear. Unfortunately, so the story goes, William Todd was given a note to include a pear on the flag, but he misread "pear," thought it said "bear" and created a bear flag, not the intended "pear flag."
How history would be different if this all was true!!!
